Metamatic:taf is excited to host the exhibition Romantic Apprehensions, which opens on Thursday 7 November and will run until 29 November 2013.
The exhibition Romantic Apprehensions aims to make a statement regarding the existential issues related to the current position and function of art as affecting the operation of artistic practice in a wider socio-political framework.
Somewhere in the ruins of our romantic fantasies, desperately standing firm against rationalism, in craving for the indefinable – in which, according to Isaiah Berlin, is present a constant movement and change – endeavouring to return to forgotten sources of life, with a passionate effort for self-realisation, either individual or collective, we are searching for the means to express our discontent with our unaccomplished objectives.
Can we carry out the future on our own? Can we demand a social change? Do we as artists have any power? If so, what are we supposed to do? If not, what’s the meaning of art nowadays? What is the artist’s role in contemporary society?
The current climate in society, marked by a romantic desire for revolution, reminds us of the era of romanticism.
